Opinion

From Library Staff

Everybody I talk to claims that this movie has aged terribly and is one of those Oscar-baity films that is just awful once a little time has passed. And so I haven't seen it in twenty years. Some day I will face my fears and rewatch it, but for now I'll cherish my memories of going to see it with... Read More »

Very touching and sincere. The tragedy of John Coffey, a man who died for doing good to people - cannot but touch to the very soul. It’s scary not only that the innocent was executed, the fact that he couldn’t find his place in the world was terrible, he was rejected by everyone, he was lonely.

To me the book was better than the movie . Of course having read the book , the element of suspense was gone , but the movie was slow paced in spots .

The Green Mile is an incredible movie, about Paul Edgecomb. Paul Edgecomb is played by Tom hanks, and he acts out a story about meeting a man named John Coffey, who has supposedly been charged with killing a pair of sisters. After meeting John Coffey he seemed to possess a prodigious, supernatural gift. He was able to cure peoples illnesses and injuries. Paul began to question whether Coffey was actually guilty of murdering the two girls. He had never encountered someone like John Coffey, he never had the demeanor for or to kill anybody. I watched this movie many times, and every time it always interests me. The acting style of Tom hanks is amazing, this is only one of his masterpieces. This movie also resembles a movie called "The Shaw shank Redemption". Which was also a great movie played by Morgan freeman. 5/5. @momo of The Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board

The greatest book to film adaptation of all time. PERIOD. I love this film so much, i cannot put it into words. The atmosphere, the acting, the writing, all hit their marks. Definitely should have won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Old Paul Edgecomb: They usually call death row the Last Mile, but we called ours the Green Mile, because the floor was the color of faded limes. We had the electric chair then. Old Sparky, we called it. I've lived a lot of years, Ellie, but 1935 takes the prize. That was the year I had the worst urinary infection of my life. That was also the year of John Coffey and the two dead girls.

Paul Edgecomb: Your name is John Coffey?
John Coffey: Yes sir boss. Like the drink, only not spelled the same.
Paul Edgecomb: Oh, you can spell can you?
John Coffey: Just my name boss

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There is a scene in which an execution by electrocution got prolonged, very prolonged. This may be hard to watch for the young and the more sensitive viewers.
