SUMMARY: When Taylor Greer hit the road, she has no real destination, only to get as far from Kentucky as possible. By the time she ends up in Arizona, she has inherited a three-year-old Cherokee girl from an Indian woman she has met in a bar. Like a mud turtle that inspired her new name, the abused little girl has a tenacious grip and holds on tightly to whatever, or whomever, gets close. Aided by a ragtag group of friends made up of illegal aliens and outcasts, Taylor struggles with the unplanned demands of motherhood celebrating small victories and regretting major mistakes. Slowly, much in the way bean vine entwines another, Turtle manages to wind her way into Taylor's heart, giving the romadic new mother her first real sense of belonging.
