"Much more than a blood-and-guts thriller...An insightful, moving, and sensitive look at what the war did to a country, its people, and its enemies." - Orlando Sentinel

Former army homicide investigator Paul Brenner has just gotten used to the early retirement forced on him after the disastrous end of his last case when his old commanding officer asks him to return for one final mission: investigate a murder that took place in wartime Vietnam thirty years before. Brenner reluctantly accepts out of curiosity and loyalty...and maybe a touch of boredom. He won't be bored for long.

Back in Vietnam, Brenner meets expatriate Susan Weber, a woman as exotic, sensual, and dangerous as the nation of her voluntary exile. Brenner is plunged into a world of corruption, lethal double cross, and haunted memories-as he's suddenly thrust back into a war that neither he nor his country ever really stopped fighting.

Demille is a jokester.
This guy inserts humor in just about every dialogue.
I enjoyed this story. But I think some of the plot points were a bit unrealistic. Problems that could have been solved with a bit more polish. I think the female "co-star" could have been slightly more fleshed out, to make her falling in love with the main character a bit more believable. He's in his 50's she's in her 30's. This most certainly can happen and does. But just give us a little more reason why in this case she became so enamored.

But, all in all the story moved along at a good clip. It was a great ride.

Outstanding sequel to The General's Daughter, the sarcastic Paul Brenner is sent back to Viet Nam where he is assigned to travel with a beautiful CIA agent to find a former North Vietnamese soldier. The relationship between the pair is what makes the book interesting. They have great chemistry with a strong dose of sexual tension stemming from the fact that Brenner is never certain whether she will betray him to the North Vietnamese or spend the night with him, or both. Add in the detective story which sends Brenner to North Viet Nam in the first place and you have a great book.

Fabulous read.

A disgruntled ex government employee gets roped into returning to Vietnam on an assignment. His observations and cynicism are hilarious. On his adventure he encounters memories, a winter spring romance and faces the demons of his own experience in the war. Good to pass the time.
