Is there greater loss than that of a child?

A January thaw sends a flash flood through a Vermont community sweeping twin daughters of Terry and Laura to their deaths. Two years later they take in foster child Alfred. Befriended by a retired professor across the road, lonely Alfred finds a hero when the neighbors gift him with a book about the Buffalo Soldiers and ask him for help caring for their new horse Mesa.

Loved this book, especially Alfred’s journey as an out-of-place boy in a small rural town, looking for acceptance. Loved how the chapters were interleaved with journal and letter fragments sharing the Buffalo Soldier experience. After reading Sarah Bird’s 'Daughter of A Daughter of A Queen' a few months ago, this seemed a continuation of some of that story.

Once again, Chris Bohjalian brings a beautiful and heartwarming story. What makes his writing so spectacular is that he is such a good observer, making even the most mundane things seem so eloquent.

This was a very touching story and I appreciated that you really got to feel what a foster child goes through.
