In this steamy, intriguingly complex, psychological thriller the line between reality and fantasy is hopelessly blurred. David tries to make sense of his life after a car crash leaves his once-handsome face grotesquely disfigured. After he is placed into a psychiatric penitentiary for a murder he doesn't remember committing, David's only hope is to delve into the depths of his subconscious mind where the answer to ending his living nightmare lies in his dreams.

Who knew I would like the American remake of a movie? Or that Tom Cruise could act? Just finished watching the 1997 Abre los ojos (Open your eyes,) and this is a very faithful Hollywood remake with familiar all star cast. Besides NYC vs Madrid, the main characters are more colorful than the original. The script is richer thanks to nearly 20 minutes longer in length.. The alleged changes to the ending are minor... i.e. "A complex sci-fi psychological romantic drama which is a bit confusing at the start but the rush at the end is well worth it."

How did I not know for 20 years this movie existed? (Apparently because all of you hated it). I don't know what I just watched, but my jaw dropped open and I didn't get it back until the end of the movie, and now I feel funny and I wish there was someone here, so I think I have to give 5 stars for being extraordinary. The visual angles and symbolism are overwhelming, Cruise's performance is emotionally moving (a hit or miss actor IMO who really does everything perfectly in this one). Did I like it? Nnnnoooo...but I feel like that's an irrelevant question. Did I understand it? Nope. Did I feel it? Yes. Is it Art? Yes.

This was the worst Tom Cruise movie that I have seen. The story was confusing and it even gave me a headache. Somehow, painfully, I laboured through the entire film...big mistake.

There is a lot to be said for a matinee idol who could explore “suddenly not looking pretty” with heartbreaking vulnerability. Based on the Spanish movie Abre los ojos, this excellent remake has a nostalgic feel and features the lovely titular song written by Paul McCartney.

I don't like to give poor reviews but this was a truly horrible, stupid, disjointed movie. The only reason we watched it to the end was curiosity. The ending was just as bad as the beginning.

The movie didn't do anything for me the first half-hour so I turned it off.

Better title: "My Face! My Beautiful Face!!" 2001's "Vanilla Sky" is a remake of the Spanish film "Open Your Eyes," which also starred Penelope Cruz. I haven't seen the original, but the American remake is bat poop crazy and I don't mean in a good way. It was part of that wave of late 90s early 00s that messed with your head like "The Matrix," "Dark City," "Memento," and "Muholland Dr." It has elements of sci-fi, but it's not really sci-fi. Tom Cruise plays a fabulously successful dude who is sleeping with Cameron Diaz, who turns into a "Fatal Attraction"-like stalker. At a party he meets and falls for Penelope Cruz, even though she's there with his best friend Jason Lee. Jerk. Then things get weird and you end up with Cruise with a messed up face and a mask that looks like the one from "Halloween." It's a big departure for director Cameron Crowe, best known for "Almost Famous" and "Say Anything." He's a decent writer, but an anonymous director at best whose only real trademark is lots of pop music of the soundtrack. It's a pretty bad movie, with Cruise giving a truly awful performances, but it has a trainwreck quality to it, in that you can't really stop watching. And for a mainstream Hollywood movie, it's pretty weird, which is something. Look for Michael Shannon ("Boardwalk Empire," "Man of Steel") in a small role as a cop. Don't look for the plot to make sense. Incidentally, Vanilla Sky was my favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor for a while.

A well done (remake of the Spanish film "Abre Los Ojos") from Cameron Crowe... (Hey, what happened to him, anyways? Fall of the face of the Earth?) Cruise is good. Penélope Cruz is just plain and simply a gift from above... rrrRROWWRRRrrr!!! Cameron Diaz is annoying and is very well suited for the whackjob role she's cast in here.

strange movie to say the least, not good, not bad, just very odd. Diaz and Cruz are gorgeous though and i'll sit through just about anything to see them

This is awful ! I really want to see this film, but when I got it home and put it in the DVD player...it says: "NOT FORMATTED FOR THIS REGION" !!?? I have watched hundreds of other New York Public Library films on this DVD player. But about a dozen have come up as "NOT FORMATTED etc. !!?? Does anyone out there know what this means ? ... darn ! I really wanted to see this one. WHY is the New York Public Library buying sooo many DVD's that are "NOT FORMATTED etc."? My branch had sent an inquery about this problem to Purchasing several weeks ago, but there has still been no response (?). Has this happened to anyone else out there ?

The sales pitch, p1 of 2:

I have a universe inside me... 'Portrait of a modern human life. American, male, birth and death. Imagine that you are suffering from a terminal illness. You'd like to be cryonised but you'd rather be resurrected to continue your own life as you know it now. LE offers you the answer. Upon resurrection, you will continue in an ageless state, preserved, but living in the present with a future of your choosing. Your death will be
wiped from your memory. Your life will continue as a realistic work of art, painted by you minute to minute. You'll live it with the romantic abandon of a summer day, with the feeling of a great movie or pop song you always loved. With no memory of how it occurred, save for the knowledge
that everything simply improved. In any instance of discontent, you'll be visited by technical support. It's just around the corner.

The sales pitch, p2 of 2:

--Did you sign a contract with these people, David?
But this is a serious business. The Lucid Dream is worth the risk. And what is any life if not the pursuit of a dream? The dream of peace, the
dream of achievement, the dream of hearing someone say these words... when they truly mean them: I love you, David. Te quiero. I love you. And the way the sunlight plays upon your hair... Roam free, David. Most of us live our whole lives without any real adventure to call our own. It's hard to comprehend, but they laughed at Jules Verne, too.
