Although there are some stories here about the "average" waitress, there are also unique stories - the Native American who waitressed at a restaurant on a reservation, a white woman who worked at a Woolworth's lunch counter in the south that was the site of civil rights sit-ins, a labor organizer, a 95 year-old waitress, and a woman who sued a high-end restaurant that wouldn't allow women to work as servers there.
It does get a bit tedious later in the book but the author is a good writer with insight and caring and that carried me through to the end. The author also correctly diagnoses many of the problems faced by waitresses in their workplaces as either sexism or classism.
This book made me think about waitresses and vow to do better by them in the future. Everyone who eats out should read this book.
