Opinion

From Library Staff

A strong ensemble of solid actors, SoCal high-school setting, a smart but dangerous mentor figure, repeatable quippy dialogue? Veronica Mars and Buffy share a lot of DNA; all that's missing is the vampires.

Because the library is an excellent place hang out with your friends and plan how to avert the apocalypse and other teenage disasters.

Of course, if you can't start with the original movie, you should begin with the first season of the TV show. Please ignore out-dated clothes and cell phones, just fall in love with the characters.

My all-time favorite tv series is difficult to summarize in a few words. This is a show that is funnier than most comedies, more moving than most dramas, and more exciting than most action shows, all at the same time. Every character has strengths and weaknesses, the heroes are all charming, and even the villains are rich characters with an appeal of their own. The origin of the series as a low-budget mid-season replacement is evident in the thin music and sometimes very grainy photography of this first season, but the stories are not only fun but set up developments which continue to pay off years later in the series. Revisit the show for its own sake, or to remind yourself how Alyson Hannigan and David Boreanaz became some of tv's biggest stars.
