I read the story because of a general interest in Alcatraz. The story was also profound in many ways beyond the setting. I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Make sure you read the interviews at the end of the book. I thought they were quite fascinating.

This is a historic fiction geared to ages 10 and above. The story is set in 1935 on Alcatraz where the families of the guards and warden reside on the island right next to the prison. The children who live there must commute to school by ferry. Moose Flanagan, the son of the
newest prison guard must navigate this new life on the island as well as helping his family and protecting his sister, Natalie. Natalie is autistic, something that was not understood in 1935. I thought this was a great read and I learned something about life on Alcatraz. This title also is a Newbery Honor book.

This was a surprising read. It was not what I had imagined from the title but I ended up liking it. It's an interesting looks into an untold piece of history. It also has a great representation of children with developmental issues or mental illnesses in that time period. I appreciate this book, found it well-written and enlightening. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A look at the children on Alcatraz-a place you only think criminals lived but it is not the case. A very good look at a boy trying to learn to be a son and brother and yet be independent. A good look at a sister who has learning difficulties and how the family members treat her. Al Capone does have a very minor role in this but he does save the day.

Great historical fiction based on the employee families living on Alcatraz Island in the 30's. Pictures of actual ones in hard copy of book. Excellent young adult fiction! Have read all 3 in the series

Our nine year old read this book in school. She is now on book two and we just put book three on order. She loved them, I may just have to read them myself!
