The internationally acclaimed crime writer introduces a new, young heroine with a familiar father. Linda Wallander is bored. Just graduated from the police academy, she is waiting to start work at the Ystad police station and move into her own apartment. Meantime, she is living with her father and, like fathers and daughters everywhere, they are driving each other crazy. Nor will they be able to escape each other when she moves out. Her father is Inspector Kurt Wallander, a veteran of the Ystad police force, whom she will have to work alongside. Linda's boredom doesn't last long. Soon she is embroiled in the case of her childhood friend Anna, who has inexplicably disappeared. As the investigation proceeds, she makes a few rookie mistakes. They are understandable, but they are also life-threatening. And as the case her father is working on dovetails with her own, something far more calculated and dangerous than either could have imagined begins to emerge. Already an international bestseller, Before the Frost inaugurates Henning Mankell's new mystery series about Linda Wallander, and also features Stefan Lindman of The Return of the Dancing Master.

The latest in the atmospheric Swedish series featuring Kurt Wallender, a dogged and introspective detective inspector. Linda, his daughter, is searching for a missing childhood friend in the weeks before she is due to take up her position in the Ystad police force. The depiction of Wallender as a middle-aged, often infuriating father gives added poignancy to our appreciation of the troubled policeman we have seen in previous books in the series.

Swedish thriller about a religious cult and the detective and his daughter - who are the main protagonist of the story- who try to apprehend the perpetrators of the killing of women who have had abortions and the burning of churches. The story begins with the disappearance and the reappearance of one of the friends of the detectives daughter; she may be involved in all of this. Again Mr. Mankell has seem to infused societal ills for the reason for this insanity ; the degradation of society. the story holds your interest from the beginning but then you're telling yourself: "not another religious cult novel!". The story is also wrapped up to quickly at the end. Major disappointment.

The writing is good. The development is rather slow. This is not an American cop novel. It's not moving fast enough. Too many explanations where there should be few, and not enough development where it would be required. At some critical point we are not explained how some act was arrived at. We are just dealt the "fait accompli". So I think the action is a bit flawed. And the subject is overused. Why attact the church if the church is against abortion? Mystery. At the end one kills himself and the other disappear in the fog. Again, a bit unsatisfactory.
A very just "good" book. This is not "very good" and surely not " excellent". But still it's quite readable.

this is the correct outline of the novel before the frost..

Ystad police make an horrific discovery: a severed head, and hands locked together in a prayer. Other incidents have been taking place and Inspector Wallander fears that these might just be the prelude to further attacks on humans. Linda Wallander, arrives at the station and becomes involved in the case. In the process she shows the hallmarks of her father - the flaring temper, the maverick approach - when confronting a group of extremists bent on punishing the world's sinners. Some descriptions of violence. -
