Will's dream on Choosing Day is to join the knights. He is, however, apprenticed to the Ranger Halt. Little did he know how hard it would be! The clandestine nature of what he learns comes in handy in the fight to save the kingdom. Great for fans of Tolkien. First in a series.

Add NoticesCoarse Language: Instances of 'damn', which isn't exactly a terrible word to say, but still not great for young children. And you, Grudgeholderr, please don't be rude. The FVRL is for honest and considerate borrowers and/or reviewers who love books.
Other: Not for young children (as those who reported it to have "course language" who think words like "damn" and "stupid" are swear words. You should probably be reading picture books. Anyways, "course language" in dialogue does not matter. And also the violence is hardly inappropriate.
Coarse Language: There's a couple of uses of the D-word here and there but it's mild compared to some books out there.

Caleb at 8-9
From the first chapter I was drawn in like a fish on a hook. 15 year old Protagonist Will, is an orphan without a clue of who his parents are. All that was found was a note tucked into his blanket when the nurses of castle Redmont found him saying "His mother died in birth, His father died a Hero." The setting is post-war, where the traitorous baron, Moragarath is threatening to take over the kingdom, Luckily they pushed him back to the mountains of rain and night, But how long until he attacks again? When Will is chosen to be apprenticed to on of the most foreboding of the rangers, The kings personal spy force, he is thrust headfirst into a battle of will, deceit, and treachery. This book contains lots of action, and some sarcastic humour. I give this book 5/5 stars because of its amazing plot and characters. John Flanagan has truly out done himself with this masterpiece.
Although The Ruins of Gorlan, the first book of the series The Ranger’s Apprentice, is an action-packed fantasy novel, the plot itself is full of strategic thinking, humor, and the occasional sarcastic comment. It features the protagonist, Will, is a 15-year-old boy who becomes an apprentice of the reclusive ranger Halt. Gradually, the pair of them go on adventures to help save the kingdom of Arulean. As someone who read the entire series, I can easily recommend this book for its dynamic characters and their unique personalities. Although The Ruins of Gorlan is well written, I can confidently suggest reading the rest of the series as well. One of main reasons why I enjoy this series is because plots are all completely different from book to book. Each of them present their own problems, goals, and eventually solutions. For example, rather than the entire series focusing on one main goal, like in Percy Jackson or Harry Potter (defeating the ultimate villain), it can be read as a collection of well-developed short stories. Most of them can be read as standalone novels, and even the ones that build off of each other have their own events that make it stand out.
The Ruins of Gorlan is an incredible tale set in a fantastical world of knights, battles, and beasts. It’s about a young boy named Will who would like nothing more than to be a knight but is not built for it. Instead, he is taken under the wing of a mysterious cloaked man named Halt, who is actually a part of the Rangers, a group of highly skilled individuals who specialize in secrecy and strategy and who play a large role in the safety of the kingdom. Will must learn to embrace this new way of life, as the kingdom faces a vicious threat from its past…
This first book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan is unbelievably entertaining. Will is a lovable protagonist who just wants to be a hero and ends up becoming exactly that. Flanagan takes us back to an exciting age of kingdoms and wars, creating a wonderfully intricate plot that will leave you wanting more.
Easily one of my favourite fantasy series, growing up, and this is the book that started it all off. The characters are wonderfully introduced and only grow more so as the series goes on, and the Kalkara are fantastic beasts with an element of horror that makes this book stand out dramatically from others, even in its own series. As places to start in proper fantasy, you can't go wrong with the Ruins of Gorlan.
This series is one of the best I have read each book is exiting and captivating! This is a series intended for younger readers but myself and many of my friends love these book and we are all older teens. You will love these wonderful books!
WARNING: if you read this book, take the day off! You will not be able to put it down!!!! (Seriously)
Some of the best fantasy out there. If you are searching for something good to read, SEARCH NO MORE. You've found it!!
Absolutely loved this book. And ready for the next one!
It's not about someone who is forged into some big event, or destined to do something great....
It's simple about a boy who becomes an apprentice and all that seems to come with that. No love it gooey when. No great big grand prophecy, no magic. It's was wonderful.
Halt is absolutely my favorite. He is who I am if I had an apprentice. What a lovely ranger here is. The best thing is everything he teaches us practical and something one would learn (or could) in real life.
If you like dnd you'll be appreciative of this book and the ones to come.
My favorite series
It does lean over to boys, but always keeps you wondering what gonna happen next
