Jacqueline's books should be mandatory reading for ages 9-99 and she always makes me nostalgic for easier days before loss and tragedy hardened my soul. She reminded me of our totally unnecessary and extremely thick orange shag carpet to compliment my brothers big bird yellow room circa 1975. As the late 70's bled into the early 80's we had thick orange wallpaper with black velvet texture that gave it a look of flowing lava. If I only knew then what lie ahead I would have done a few things differently.

Frannie's family includes her deaf older brother who imagines a world where a bridge can take you from one world to another.
Hope can be that bridge.
A very sweet story.

I like everything I've read by Jacqueline Woodson so far. This was a good young adult read for 4th - 8th graders especially. I like how she creates rich characters like Frannie and how she shows how every person -- the new kid, the bully, the outsider -- has both strengths and weaknesses and therefore they are more alike than not. I enjoyed reading this book.

Beautiful story about hope. Enjoy it in the car as a family.

A very well written book. It shows some of perceptions people have on people of other colour. My favourite character was definatley Jesus Boy because he is really mysterious. Definatley a must read.
