(*Memorable movie-quote*) - "You filthy, good-for-nothing convict!"

If nothing else - This 1932 "Convict-On-The Run" picture certainly makes quite a brutal statement about the barbaric conditions of the Georgia State justice system as it existed 86 years ago.

Though this film's story is decidedly dated in many ways - For the most part, it proved to hold my interest and not let me down.

Based on the "real-life" autobiography of ex-con, Robert Burns - 1932's "I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang" is a pre-code, Depression era, convict picture that gets the royal Hollywood treatment.

This 86-year-old picture certainly makes quite a damning statement about the brutal conditions of the Georgia State penal system where regular beatings from the guards was accepted as part of everyday life for the prisoners.

Even today - This film still manages to pack a considerable-sized wallop. But, its tendency to depict the convicts as being the "good guys" and the men behind the justice system as being the "bad guys" was a bit hard to swallow at times.

Anyway - I think that this vintage crime-picture was certainly well-worth a view, in the long run.

Definitely an interesting pre-code Hollywood film with some legitimate political punch. Muni's reputation (now long forgotten) is understandable from his performance, which is remarkably natural compared to the theatricality of his co-stars. Its a melodrama and has its problems, but it still holds up reasonably well as a Depression era piece of pop culture.

When you bring up "I am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang" the entry bellow it is for a book titled "Not To Be Missed - Fifty -Four Favorites from a Lifetime of Film." by Kenneth Turan. I think that sums it up for me as well. I haven't read the book, but the movie is a spellbinder. Paul Muni plays the best role he was ever given and he had some great movie roles. KCLS has only one copy which shows no holds but none available either. Your guess is as good as mine. I am going to order it and see what happens.. Wish me luck!!

A beautifully filmed and acted movie from the Golden Era of Hollywood. Paul Muni gives a devastating performance as a wrongly convicted man sentenced to a chain gang that he escapes from. This film still holds up today, 81 years later in it's depiction of the what men in such situations endured. Disturbing, bleak, and grim, it's a masterpiece.
