The story of a family and town's effort to save a beloved and heroic dog named Semper Fi. Their lives tumble along, as most families do, until they must face the grave diagnosis of their golden retriever, Semper Fi. The family cannot afford the expensive surgery the dog needs. The children jump into action with a plan, spear headed by the fifteen-year-old daughter. They plan a community yard sale, donating all of their most-prized possessions. Before Semper Fi goes in for his surgery, he displays a heroic act that almost ends his life.

Based on a true story, “For the Love of a Dog” is a wholesome, family-friendly movie. The story is not as much about a sick dog as it is about family dynamics, respect and personal growth. Some of the acting was a bit exaggerated, but that was mostly done by secondary characters and therefore wasn’t too distracting. It was a nice surprise to see Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson of "The Jeffersons") on the screen with his character once again being a bit of a hot-headed softy.

Although the acting was lacking in a few spots, this is an excellent all around family movie. Sherman Hemsley (The Jeffersons) was the best as George, the grumpy neighbor. Have a box of tissue on hand.
