"Charlie Chan at Treasure Island", 1939, stars Sidney Toler as the replacement Charlie Chan for the lately deceased Warner Oland. Fox reportedly tested 34 actors before selecting Toler. Audiences loved these Charlie Chan movies and 20th Century Fox needed to keep the cash cow going. Cesar Romero was perfectly cast in this black and white film. Keye Luke's Number One Son's role ended with the death of Oland when he was replaced with Number Two Son, well played by Victor Sen Yung making his successful bid for acceptance as the ever present offspring with 'foot in mouth'.

Unlike in Earl derr Biggers' books, "Number One Son" is featured in many Chan movies, this being one of them. I love most Charlie Chan movies and both Warner Oland and Sidney Toler do a great job as the Chinese-born Hawaiian detective. If you like the movies, read the books: they are great.
