Although there are some tragic events (would it be a Catherine Cookson story without them?) this against-all-odds romance is full of optimistic, holiday feeling. A stalwart middle class girl must choose -- or does she? -- between two upper class brothers. The fast-paced story, the WW I-era setting, and surprisingly good acting produce some truly moving moments. Anne Reid and Julian Wadham are standouts. Of all the made-for-TV adaptations of her works, this was Cookson's favourite.

This was really great! It wasn't what I was expecting at all and it pleasantly surprised me! Recommend for those who love British period dramas and good romances. There were a lot of twists and turns and you can't help but fall in love with the characters...especially Charles and Reg. Amazing!
