As with most John Adams music -it gets under your skin and finds its way into your deepest musical cell structure. Guide to Strange Places is amazingly captivating (my current favorite Adams piece as of 6/2013). The Drums and Percussion are strong and deep, pulsing throughout -and of course the low brass and strings are in full force. I really enjoy the fact that Adams places a premium on syncopated time signatures and powerful percussion. The final 4-5 minutes of Guide to Strange Places is jam packed with incredible motifs, change-ups, and unexpected gems. How does he do it? Amazing!

This piece joins my other favorites; The Dharma at Big Sur, The Wound Dresser, Naive and Sentimental Music, Eros Piano, Lollapalooza, El Dorado, Harmonielehre, and the Violin Concerto!

There is so much more to say about John Adams and his music.... He is our leading contemporary composer, a treasure. Get out your favorite Headphones, get yourself comfortable in your favorite chair and close your eyes ~
