New York Times -bestselling October Daye faerie series * Hugo Award-winning author Seanan McGuire * "Top of my urban-paranormal series list!" --Felicia Day

The world of Faerie never disappeared; it merely went into hiding, continuing to exist parallel to our own. Secrecy is the key to Faerie's survival--but no secret can be kept forever, and when the fae and mortal worlds collide, changelings are born.

Outsiders from birth, these half-human, half-fae children spend their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations. Or, in the case of October "Toby" Daye, rejecting it completely. After getting burned by both sides of her heritage, Toby has denied the fae world, retreating into a "normal" life. Unfortunately for her, Faerie has other ideas...

The murder of Countess Evening Winterrose, one of the secret regents of the San Francisco Bay Area, pulls Toby back into the fae world. Unable to resist Evening's dying curse, Toby must resume her former position as knight errant to the Duke of Shadowed Hills and begin renewing old alliances that may prove her only hope of solving the mystery...before the curse catches up with her.

First book of a wonderful urban fantasy series set in San Francisco and featuring a heroine who has been through the wringer, tricksy Fae, an interesting array of magical beings, and a world you'll want to see more of.

This is the first of one of my all time favorite series. It just gets better and better with each book. Highly recommend!

This is one of my favorite urban fantasy series. October "Toby" Daye is such a fun, snarky character, but this series is a bit darker than McGuire's InCryptids series. Toby has gone through a lot of loss, and has to recover so much of herself in each step she takes.

In this first novel, Toby comes back from 14 years spent as a fish to find that her human family believes she deserted them and now want nothing to do with her. She wants nothing to do with Faerie - being turned into a fish against your will can do that to a person - but Faerie is determined to drag her back, kicking and screaming and possibly dying if need be.

McGuire's writing is sharp, quick, and a blast to read. I always find myself staying up until unreasonable hours of the night to finish her novels. One of my favorite things about this series is the way that October's actions always have consequences. There are events in this book that shape her life over the course of the entire series, and McGuire always follows through when she gives a bit of foreshadowing - even if it takes a book or seven. Highly recommended.

Fans of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series will enjoy this urban fantasy series featuring half-faerie, half-human private detective October Daye.

It's the very first book in the October Daye series. Here we meet Toby a private detective/ Fairy/ badass as she is forced to return to the world she gave up after her last case turned her into a fish and she lost the reality that she had worked to create.

Excellent urban fantasy. Really great depictions of faery, not Disneyesque or anything. My only reservation is that they have too many people being let down and dying. I think having some of that is a great plot device but the author kind of overkilled on that.

Great characters, great lore, and a great story! The world was engaging, the magic system thorough and balanced, and the narrator skilled.

I loved this book. The way the author has portrayed the fae community is simply amazing. I recommend this book for anyone who has enjoyed Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series

I really enjoyed this one. It was nice to see a female lead whose story doesn't devolve into erotica after the first chanpter. I did find it a bit hard to get into, but once the story gets going, I finished it off in one night.

This book sucked me in from the beginning, and I now recommend it to any friends who enjoy urban fantasy. Seanan McGuire has become one of my favorite authors!

I heard great reviews of the series and really enjoyed reading 'Feed' a zombie novel by Seanan McGuire's pen name Mira Grant (or is it the other way 'round?).
I found the plotting wasn't was strong as I expected compared to her other books. I also wasn't fond of the outline of the types of fae at the beginning of the novel, it was too lengthy and should have been somehow incorporated into the text.
That said, I found myself enjoying the book close to the end but it took me a long time to get to that point. I'll probably pick up the 2nd in the series to give it a try if only to see what's going on with Tybalt (really the only character that grabbed my attention and held it).

Here we meet October "Toby" Daye. A Private Investigator, a mother, and a knight of faerie. Though her life is pretty boring since she got turned into a fish for 14 years and decided maybe avoiding faerie for awhile as a Safeway night clerk. Too bad for Toby there ain't no rest for the wicked.

When her friend Evening Winterrose is murdered, Toby is thrust back into the world of the fae. Will she survive long enough to find Evening's Murdered or join her as one of the fallen.
