"A page-turner...Chichton's writing is cinematic, with powerful visual images and nonstop action. This book should come with hot buttered popcorn." NEWSWEEK A group of American scientists are rushed to a huge vessel that has been discovered resting on the ocean floor in the middle of the South Pacific. What they find defines their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship of phenomenal dimensions, apparently, undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old.... "The suspense is real." THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

I know its science fiction, but the plot has enough holes in it to float a submarine through. Several words come to mind. The story starts well, but quickly turns from sublime , to ridiculous, to preposterous. However, it has the ability to keep you reading , just to see what incredible events occur in bringing it to a conclusion.

I'd have given this 4 stars instead of 3 all the way through. It's a great read and a baffling mystery that compels you to read quickly to discover the answers. But it was the one final twist at the very end that convinced me to drop down to three stars. I just couldn't quite buy their ultimate solution to the enormous problems that gripped them as a result of the Sphere experience. I get it, and it's very clever as to why and how they were able to reach that end result. I just couldn't quite accept the ease and rapidity at their shared ability to impose the final consequence. But definitely, all in all, another mind-blowing experience from Crichton. He is unparalleled in that regard.

fun and addictive. I watched 20,000 leagues under the sea afterwards to keep the fun going.

Michael Crichton at his best! The technology my have changed, and we know more about computers and about astrophysics, but the frontiers of First Contact, and the boundaries of the human mind, and the sheer terror - those will be always new. If you are going to read one book by Crichton, this is it.

Disappointing pulp fiction. The story is well paced and compelling but in order to enjoy it you have to turn your brain off since it turns into a series of escalating events, each more unbelievable than the last.

My second favourite of Crichton's novels (after Airframe). This is another one that has me returning to reread it periodically. The first time I read it, I didn't see any of the twists or turns coming. Even now that I know them all, it's still a thrilling page turner.

Excellent sci-fi thriller. Moves at a great pace and kept me entertained and guessing the whole way through, while also exploring some interesting scientific and psychological topics. It's the first Crichton book I've read and I think I'll be looking to read more.

Crichton is the best. As always, it was full of interesting theories, kept me on the edge.

This is such an entertaining book. A re-read for me, but I had forgotten how good it is. I really enjoy Crichton's style, he manages to entertain and educate at the same time. Definitely recommend this one
