Beautiful Penn photos of a fine selection of early twentieth century clothes. Penn's photos are poor at documenting the clothes themselves as something to examine (his same problem with his Issey Miyake books: you can't see the clothes very well). Diana Vreeland's text is full of nostalgic superlatives about an age gone by. This is a beautiful book about the importance of beautiful clothes worn by a graceful upperclass society that no longer exists. If that sounds wonderful, this is your book. And in that context, it's a useful document. For anyone looking for details about the clothes, this is not for you.
