Just read a comment on another Crichton novel complaining that it was a chain of suspenseful events, each one more unbelievable than the preceding ones. I disagreed with that criticism of 'Sphere', which I found entirely believable and fascinating. Ironically, however, I found it more applicable to this final offering from the late-great author. I almost bailed early on, but I'm glad I didn't because I found that once I got past the notion that this was Tom Thumb Times Nine, I devoured the story with ravenous satisfaction. I particularly liked the horrific joy I got from the part about the hornet's chimney, so graphically explicit that I was in utter awe! Really a good read and fun to guess which parts were Crichton himself and which were contributed by the post-mortem substitute author, whose name escapes me because I haven't read anything else by the guy. I recommend you keep reading even if, like me, you find it somewhat incredulous in the early going. It turns into a fascinating, intricately detailed story, which Crichton was such a master of.
