I don't quite believe in this idealized band of eco-warriers, versus a private (and evil, natch) security firm. What if the eco-warriers were more personally flawed and dangerous, as they might be in real life, and they were taking on the FBI? The issues would appear more complex then. And yet, The East does a decent job of presenting the temptations of both the status quo and violent action, and even a third way that is the opposite of apathy. Brit Marling has written herself a starring role; I hope to see more of her soon. The East is one of the last films produced jointly by Ridley Scott and the late Tony Scott.
