Although it states on the cover that this is a companion to “Between the Lines”, this book is clearly a sequel to its surprising and enchanting predecessor. “Off the Page” takes up where “Between the Lines” ends and proves once again that happily ever after is strictly a fairy tale concept. Real-life woes provide joys and sorrows for the newly liberated Oliver and the authors don’t spare him or the reader as he attempts to negotiate the tricky minefield that is—gasp!—high school. Prepare to have your heartstrings wrung as Oliver, Edgar, Delilah and Jules realize that sacrifices must be made and losses endured in order for the greater good to prevail. This novel ably brings adults into its sphere as it forces its adolescent characters to negotiate grown-up problems. The question of doing the right thing as opposed to getting what you want is explored and, sadly, not everyone is happy at the end. But, as with all fine books and great travels, it is the journey that matters not the finish.
