Jess Kemp, a sixtysomething waitress and grandmother living in Nelson B.C., decides to set up a grow-op in her home when her restaurant burns down leaving her with no means of support and meagre job prospects. What could be an improbable and even farcical situation is made believable in Jennifer Craig's capable hands. I think the author's greatest strength is character development. She vividly and empathetically portrays the people in Jess's social circle, from different generations and walks of life. The ending was satisfying too - upbeat without being Polyannaish.
