I am a fan of Laura Lippman's work, and have been reading her since her first novel came out. I especially like this book, for its homage to the noir detective style. Sure, there is an element of Gone Girl, but that style, too, has been around for years. The characters may or not be telling the truth, they may be acting on misinformation or only a partial view of the way their world is. But they act and react in a logical and understandable way. Lippman keeps up her Baltimore references and she continues to explore the love or lack thereof of a mother and child. This story is set in the 1990's, and touches tangentially on songs an news stories to add that easy sense of verisimilitude. I look forward to her next novel.
