Laurie Metcalf and Saoirse Ronan excel in this mother-daughter coming-of-age tale. The rebellious and self-centered Saoirse is in her senior year at the local Catholic high school. She yearns to leave Sacramento's small-town atmosphere, her economically strapped family, and especially her mom. A perceptive nun suggests the theater as a way of channeling her frustration, which opens the door to dating, a new set of friends, and the possibility of college in the East.
