I loved Beartown, but I did not love this book. You absolutely can not and should not read Us Against Them unless you have read and loved Beartown. The author takes many pages (maybe a third of the book?) to remind us what happened in the previous book, before launching into the continuing story. He keeps warning us that things will be difficult, but he also shows a few glimmers of positive things to come. I wondered if I would be rewarded for sticking with this book; it felt like a slog at times. This author does a lot of foreshadowing in all of his books, and in this book, it feels really heavy-handed. I found this book to be emotionally draining. It is not a bad book, but it is really not that enjoyable. I liked Beartown much better. This book has way more hard things happen to the characters than things to celebrate. But if you want to know what happens next to the characters you met in Beartown, you should read this book.
