“Playback” is the last and shortest novel completed by Chandler. Like all other Marlowe novels, the witty hardboiled dialog and the various relationships are far more important than the actual mystery solutions. One still would like a solution to each and every murder, but even if the causes seem phony, the wit keeps one satisfied. One of the greatest comebacks (in my words) was “I’ve got friends that could cut you down to size so much you’ll need a ladder to get into your shoes.” This may be the only novel in which Marlowe actually goes to bed with one of the women.
