This strange novel with an unlikable protagonist lands so far outside the “normal” box that it’s hard to articulate why it’s so moving. The author manages to wed contemporary questions about land use in rural France to philosophical analyses of human prehistory; while at the same time delivering character development in a satisfying way. Fans of Otessa Moshfegh and/or Olga Tokarczuk would be likely to enjoy this.
