Books set in prison

This list is inspired by the devastatingly evocative new book from Wally Lamb, "The River is Waiting." Prison is a setting the majority of people will never experience first hand, which may be what makes it so intriguing. These books, some fiction, some memoir, some journalistic, paint a personal portrait of life behind bars. These are the cream of the crop, all well researched and written, and are sure to make you put yourself in the shoes of a prisoner.
