I've always loved epic adventures in outer space, whether they're set in the far future or a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Here are just some of my favorites.

  • Probably my introduction to space adventures when I was very young. As much as I love the classic series, there really aren't that many good episodes. But you can't go wrong with collections of the best of show.

  • Star Wars

IV, a New Hope ; V, the Empire Strikes Back ; VI, Return of the Jedi

I saw the original Star Wars when it came out in theaters and it sparked such wonder in my little head. When it comes to the age-old question of "Star Trek or Star Wars", I like them both...but Star Trek is a little more my thing because…
DVDBeverly Hills, CA : Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, [2013] — DVD Star
  • This underappreciated series seems a little dated now, only because what was ahead of its time (CGI effects, serialized storytelling with an overarching story) has now become commonplace. But it's still worth a watch for its great…
DVDBurbank, CA : Warner Home Video, [2002] — DVD Babylon Season1
  • The #1 SF comedy, the series that all other space comedies will forever be compared to. I don't think anyone has crammed so much spacy wit and imagination into literature. Except maybe Catherynne M. Valente...

  • A love letter to Douglas Adams, glam rock, and the Eurovision song contest, this is hilarious, gorgeously imaginative, and very moving.
BookLondon ; New York : Saga Press, [2018] — FICTION Valente Catheryn
  • The most postmodernist book on this list. A nonlinear collage of an epic, set in an alternate past where Art Deco rockets travel the lush, habitable planets and moons of our solar system. It's the kind of beautiful and strange that Valente…
BookNew York : Tom Doherty Associates, 2015. — SCIFI Valente Catheryn
  • One of my favorite imaginings of a diverse alien galactic civilization, with a diverse group of human teens finding their place in out in the vastness of space. A terrific take on the "Chosen One" trope.
BookNew York : Tor Teen, 2021. — TEEN FICTION Anders Charlie 04/2021
  • Star Wars meets Korean mythology and magic, this science fantasy adventure is heaps of fun, with fox spirits and ghost-haunted spaceships.
    BookLos Angeles ; New York : Disney-Hyperion, 2019. — J FICTION Lee Yoon 01/2019
  • A thrill-a-minute race around the galaxy with a protagonist who narrates with maximum levels of snark. And a hunk of a shipmate/love interest named Hell Monkey. What's not to love?

  • Star Wars, Star Trek, and countless other SF have had elements of the Western, but Firefly put it in the forefront and gave us a 'Verse that felt classic and lived in. And universally acknowledged as canceled by the network far too soon.
DVD[Beverley Hills, Calif.] : Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, 2003. — DVD Firefly 7-DAY 2002
  • The movie that did it's best to wrap up all the loose threads left behind when Firefly was canceled. I don't think it worked as well as if the series had been allowed to play out, but it worked and it ends up being a really wild ride.
DVDUniversal City, CA : Universal Pictures, c2005. — DVD Serenity
  • If you like Firefly, Star Wars, and cats--like I do--you'll really like this. And I did. In fact, I'm pretty sure there are references to Firefly and Star Wars, and a bunch of other pop culture favorites, buried not too deeply in Chilling…

  • You had me at "starship crewed by dolphins who speak in haiku," David Brin. The Uplift universe is truly epic, even when the action is kept to one ship stuck on one planet.
BookNew York : Bantam Books, 1995, c1993. — FICTION Brin David
  • I love the technology, alien cultures, and intricate politics here. I particularly like that humans are not the dominant species. Wonderful stuff.

  • This recent reboot of the Japanese classic is top notch science fantasy, packed with thrilling adventure, epic battles, drama, humor, and gobs of weirdness.
DVDUniversal City, CA : Universal Studios Home Entertainment, 2018. — TV VOLTRONL S.01-02
  • Originally promoted as a parody of Star Trek, it's really more of a loving tribute to The Next Generation, capturing Trek's spirit of wonder and humanism, but with the humor of Guardians of the Galaxy. Honestly, I didn't think I'd like it…
