Thời kỳ hoạt động ở núi rừng Thanh Hóa là giai đoạn khó khăn nhất của khởi nghĩa Lam Sơn - vừa chống giặc Minh, vừa chống Ai Lao. Đối mặt với sự vây khốn của kẻ thù, nghĩa quân đã bao lần lâm vào tình thế hiểm nghèo: ba lần rút chạy lên núi Chí Linh, thiếu quân lương, binh sĩ hao hụt, quân tâm lung lay,... Dù vậy, nghĩa quân vẫn giương cao ngọn cờ kháng chiến, tin vào thắng lợi tương lai." --
