Over the course of years Harry and Rose form a fierce attachment during his trips to Rose's house in town. But the friendship is severed the night Harry and his mother are persuaded to stay over because of an air raid on the island. Rose's father returns home unexpectedly to find the children asleep in the same bed and Harry and his mother are banned from the house. It is a wrenching apart that reveals to Harry the harsh realities of social difference and the gulf that divides Rose's world from his. They meet again years later when Rose travels to Canada to visit her daughter and seeks out Harry, who is still single and has become a self-made and successful man. Their social differences in Canada are not so apparent and they begin a life-affirming affair. A series of unexpected events are set in motion as Rose takes it upon herself to re-route their destinies.Told in standard English and the diction of a Caribbean islander, this is above all a love story, a story of one man's ambition, his failures and triumphs, and an exploration of the origins of desires. It is a lyrical, sensuous and suspenseful story about the danger of love against all odds, and the sacrifice and euphoria that come with defying the life one is born into.
