Comment:

I loved this book. I love anything that celebrates early hip hop, granted, but this is a special one. The art in this illustrated biography of DJ Kool Herc, AKA Clive Campbell, fits the cool, chunky beats the man laid down at parties in the Bronx. The story of an evolving art form and one of its pioneers is expertly told, but much more text heavy than I expected. School Library Journal is on target with its age range 3rd to 5th grade, but Publishers Weekly skewed a little young. The story is fast-paced and engrossing- I would love to have seen the text spread out across more pages with more fabulous illustrations by Coretta Scott King & Steptoe winner Taylor!

I’ll admit- I’m obsessed with the 1918 influenza epidemic. I devour any and every book written about the subject and conduct my own research in my free time. Laura Spinney’s treatment of the epidemic comes at its 100th anniversary, but many mysteries remain to be unraveled including accurate estimates of the death toll. There has been a small explosion of publishing on the subject; Spinney’s stands out from the in its purposefully global perspective. The vast majority of research and analysis has been in the United States and Europe even though statistics available shortly after the last wave of flu receded evidenced a much greater death toll in South America, Africa, and south Asia. Spinney traces the magnified impacts to dramatic social upheaval such as the independence movement in India and the rise of apartheid in South Africa. In pushing past the medical aspects common to most writing on the 1918 flu and drawing on economic, psychological, and sociological research, Spinney delivers a fuller portrait of what actually happened during the epidemic around the whole world and how its catastrophic impacts continue a century later.

The typical "prince seeks a mate, prince encounters obstacles, prince finds mate" fairy tale is made sweetly new in this bright picture book. The prince meets princesses from around the world, but he knows that none of them are the right person for him. When a brave knight helps him defeat the dragon threatening his people, the prince finally meets his perfect partner. Sexuality and acceptance are navigated without any heavy handedness or overexplanation. A perfect pick for families who like sharing fairy tales, fantastic adventures, and stories of true love in all its beautiful forms.

Comment:

"This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper." ~T.S. Eliot Indeed, it does in Nevil Shute's novel. Nuclear war would not instantly wipe out the entire human race, the suppositions go, instead condemning most of the world's population to a slow, painful death by radiation poisoning. As cities, countries, whole continents go "out," all there is to do in Melbourne, Australia is wait for the inevitable fallout. It's strange how fascinating a novel about day to day life in 1960s Australia ends up being in that dark context. If I'm looking a little groggy today, it's because I couldn't put this one down last night.
