In Other Words is a celebration of Language. Also it's a memoir on the craft of writing. There are many profound moments that go beyond simply studying another language. The author explores the Italian language from a creative standpoint. If you don't (or, like me, can't) read the Italian on the left-hand side of the pages, it makes for very quick reading indeed. In Other Words is a celebration of Language. This was a trippy ride through an all-girl college in the seventies. A shy student is drawn toward a much older teacher with a hypnotic personality. Well-written and psychological, if not occasionally disorienting.

Bleak and beyond violent, but rich and textural. It makes his more popular novel, The Road, seem downright warm and fuzzy by comparison. Judge Holden is up there with Hannibal Lecter as one of the most cold-blooded characters in literature.

World War I romance between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley. The love affair between Catherine and Frederic is a little ham-handed and forced. Sometimes it made me think of how people in a desperate situation, faced with war and death at every turn, might fall in love. Other times it felt a little dry and silly. Still, the language around it was rich and it felt like a classic. If you can get past some of the cheese, you arrive at a brilliant war story, one of the great ones.World War I romance between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley. Bleak and resounding. Each page has fallen into disarray just like the world the characters now occupy. If you like post-apocalyptic dramas, you’ll like this. Be warned, though, much of the standard grammatical organization has been thrown out in favor of a more stripped-down, desolate style.Bleak and resounding. This second installment of Karl Ove Knausgard’s "My Struggle" series picks up where the first volume left off. Sort of. Many of the themes touched on in Book 1 carry over into Book 2, but a new light shines on the protagonist. Karl Ove is in love and he is in Sweden. He fights for the solitude he needs in order to write in the face of the immense responsibility of raising a child with his girlfriend. This second installment of Karl Ove Knausgard’s "My Struggle" series picks up where the first volume left off.
