I couldn't put down these two novellas that fall into the cracks between horror, mystery, and scifi. They ultimately felt a little like episodes of X-Files, tidy impossibilities whose explanations leave even more questions. I liked the SCIENCE, though I'm a little stupid in this department so it wouldn't take much to dazzle me. They've got all the Dark and Stormy Night charm of something like Frankenstein and don't aim to say too much about the world, so they're perfect for an easy and quick suspension of reality.I couldn't put down these two novellas that fall into the cracks between horror, mystery, and scifi. Hughes is such a master of eerie tension and In a Lonely Place leaves you stranded and suspect. I love to slowly become suspicious and this is the kinda book where your uncertainty and the protagonist's intertwine to disorienting satisfaction. Hughes makes Dix a garbage heap with strange allure and the other characters are fantastic, too--lots of legible society people with rough edges and mysterious histories. I came to this wanting a spooky Halloween read that wasn't necessarily horror and it got me distrusting even the slightest crinkle of a leaf behind me.Hughes is such a master of eerie tension and In a Lonely Place leaves you stranded and suspect. Wow as a huge Mariah Carey fan (lamb), when I first saw this book I was like, "Did I black out and write a YA novel?" It turns out no, I did not, but a fully conscious person did and we have major differences in how we would have told this tale. While ultimately, I can't knock this book for trying to broaden the sphere of LGBTQ+ teen publishing with a genderqueer lead, it's got that nonstop World-is-Crumbling drama thing going on that makes a lot of YA fiction unreadable. It was also disappointing to read a YA book where the only adult solutions to bullying and harassment involve the police. Even the "bad-turned-good" principal does nothing to fix what's happening at a discussion-based level that centers Carey's needs. Everyone is just hauled off in custody after things escalate to physical violence. Considering the violent and deadly history of policing specifically in the LGBTQ+ community and especially for transgender and gender nonconforming people presently, this fairy tale element does not sit well with me. I kept reading to the end because I wanted to read about the Mariah Carey concert (lol), but you know what Mariah would never perform "Runway" live (even though its a true masterwork), it's an exclusive bonus track and she has 18 #1 hits to run through. The author really skimped on the Mariah concert, which should have easily been 50-70% of the book. Rookie mistake!!! Anyway, I look forward to a blossoming subgenre of gay Mariah Carey-themed YA novels.Wow as a huge Mariah Carey fan (lamb), when I first saw this book I was like, "Did I black out and write a YA novel?" If you have found this book while trying to understand the transition of someone close to you, I beg you to look to real trans perspectives before reading a book by someone whose career is bankrolled by moral panic. Susan Stryker’s thoroughly researched books of trans history, Stephanie Brill’s books on parenting a trans kid, and Kate Bornstein’s super fun work on understanding gender identity & expression provide a fuller portrait of trans life & may even lead you to a new understanding of yourself.
One thing being a librarian has taught me is that anyone can publish a book about anything--it certainly doesn't make them an expert or even mean that the book is good or true. This book is a pseudoscientific hate screed masquerading as nonfiction. The author claims to support the trans movement, but in just the first twenty pages, she calls transitioning a “psychological ailment,” suggests young people are transitioning to avoid being sexually assaulted, and misgenders Brandon Teena, a young transman who was murdered after being outed in 1993. To file this level of hatred and confusion under the banner of "Support" is not only deceitful but violent. It also tells me that the author has an agenda that is unconcerned with reality. Throughout the book, pronouns are used as the author sees fit (trans men are only given he/him pronouns—for example—if they pass as men according to her visual standards), interviews about trans teens feature the parents & never the teens themselves, and few sources are cited because there’s hardly anything concrete or factual to back up. A few trans YouTubers featured in a section called "The Influencers" have already spoken out about the author misrepresenting or totally manipulating their stories/interviews. Beyond this, one of the surest signs of bad investigative journalism is someone with no ties to the subject repeatedly making a book about herself; I guarantee you won’t go a few pages without the author telling you some irrelevant and completely boring personal anecdote.
This particular brand of impossible-to-cite / fake-anecdotal “Queers Are Coming For the American Family” rhetoric has been used to deligitimize/criminalize queer & trans existence since the McCarthy era stoked the flames of 20th century homophobia (in ways that have impacted healthcare and employment for lgbtq+ people to this day no less). It's old hat--paranoia sells. If you're new to this topic, I hope you'll look for a book in our catalog that considers trans perspectives. If you have found this book while trying to understand the transition of someone close to you, I beg you to look to real trans perspectives before reading a book by someone whose career is bankrolled by moral panic. In an extremely unacceptable attack on me personally someone has rated this book two stars.
I am here to right this grievous wrong. Yes, the library is flooded with new celebrity memoirs every year but Mariah isn't just some celebrity, she is a DIVA and don't we all live for the calculated highs and incalculable lows of divahood--the chaotic ebbs & flows, the DRAMA of it all. (Not to mention the owner of vocal chords that will make you openly weep into your cart when "Vision of Love" comes on the grocery store smooth hits station.) I can't give an unbiased review of this book because my brain has been poisoned by 20 years of worshipping Mariah Carey but most MC Lambs (fans) would tell you this book is business as usual--shade, perseverance, romance, studio time, lows without pity, highs with self-reflection (& a bit of "I told you so"). Mariah has been telling her story in song since 1990--this book just fleshes out the details. Of course the woman who once opened a pop song with the lines, "Images of rapture / creep into me slowly" can tell a story. If you don't like this book maybe you should go get some taste & then get back to me!!!!!! (Highly rec the Mariah-read audiobook vended by evil Amazon company Audible.)In an extremely unacceptable attack on me personally someone has rated this book two stars.

Hustlers opens to Janet Jackson's "Control" & while, as the lyrics will have you know, it is a story about control, it's also a story about female friendship, extremely satisfying cons, the financial crisis of 2007/08, & the way light glistens off Jennifer Lopez's heaven-sent biceps while she does things like shop for fur coats with her work colleagues. It's a movie, too, about the surreal experience of money--where it comes from & who gets to have it--& an examination of a workplace--all of its exploitation & ugliness & the kind of camaraderie & love that can only come from a mutual understanding of these things. I would love Hustlers even if it didn't have Jennifer Lopez but here we are with a Jennifer Lopez vehicle that even has a bit role for Julia Stiles--the early 00s are alive and well. This movie was made for me--a woman who just wants to watch a lot of ladies play cards or rob banks--so my review is extremely biased but I am here to say this movie rocks.Hustlers opens to Janet Jackson's "Control" & while, as the lyrics will have you know, it is a story about control, it's also a story about female friendship, extremely satisfying cons, the financial crisis of 2007/08, & the way light glistens off…

No writer better at picking apart human ugliness so thoroughly that you begin to distrust everything you know about yourself. A great story of obsession and the uncanny as two strangers meet on a train and their lives begin to mesh and meld in disarray. Highsmith is the type of writer who can tell you everything in a glance, the ashing of a cigarette, the way a hat sits atop someone's head. You really learn to despise these characters but somehow also end up sharing in their displeasure, too. A real slow-burn kind of like eating one of those crackers made entirely of seeds--you earn the thrill. Highsmith's The Talented Mr. Ripley has similar themes & pacing if you're looking for something to read next.No writer better at picking apart human ugliness so thoroughly that you begin to distrust everything you know about yourself. How to Survive a Plague is a comprehensive time capsule of Act Up's HIV/AIDS activism in the 80s & 90s, a portrait of the two-pronged attack--protesting and research advocacy--that saved an unknowable number of lives and galvanized the lgbtq+ and HIV-positive community in NYC. The movie pulls from a seemingly inexhaustible cache of protest footage, home videos, and public media/speaking appearances to give a human face to the movement, but stops in 1996 with the discovery of Protease inhibitors. Much history lies ahead as HIV/AIDS remains an epidemic worldwide--there is a part two to be made. France's book of the same name is an incredibly thorough companion to this film. Crucial history for a world that has started to seriously examine structural violence and healthcare access. How to Survive a Plague is a comprehensive time capsule of Act Up's HIV/AIDS activism in the 80s & 90s, a portrait of the two-pronged attack--protesting and research advocacy--that saved an unknowable number of lives and galvanized the lgbtq+ and…

Mariame drops out of school and joins a girl gang where she begins to find confidence. This film makes efforts to portray the reality of class, race, and gender in Paris and how they intersect to force Mariame into an early adulthood that keeps her without choice or security. Rarely do we get movies that show the strength of bonds between girls--even amidst all of the bad choices of youth and a socioeconomic status that guarantees struggle. How girls protect each other in a world that seems hellbent on denying them time and space to decide for and learn about themselves! "That's me: an old kazoo w/ sparklers in it," says Bette Davis whose sleepy-sultry eyes make her look on perennial edge of a breakdown. I am obsessed with this, a perfect movie--scenes lit with fear and a certain glamour given to moments normally denied such a thing. Jane Fonda fleshes out her character to furthest degree and we feel as equally desperate for the film's ending as we do to see her spill at the therapist. Like Hitchcock run through women's lib. I love this movie and I LOVE Jane Fonda's mullet.
